The MSLC hires undergraduate students to serve as tutors, student office assistants, and student technology assistants.
We also maintain a list of private tutors who work independent of the MSLC. To be on this list, you must have served as an instructor for the OSU mathematics department, be a current MSLC undergraduate tutor, or a graduated MSLC undergraduate tutor.
Types of Employment

To apply, you must be an undergraduate student at OSU and be enrolled in enough credit hours to be considered a full time student.
Tutor Requirements
- Tutors should possess excellent mathematics skills, having earned a B+ or higher in Math 1152/1172 or higher. *Note, students currently enrolled in Math 1152/1172 may submit an application with hiring contingent on a final grade of B+ or higher.
- Tutors should possess excellent communication skills.
- Tutors should possess a patient, helpful, caring, and sensitive demeanor and a positive attitude when working with students.
- Tutors must attend weekly trainings and additional assigned online trainings. Particularly in their first semester, tutors should expect to spend 1-2 hours per week on training. One hour of training per week will occur in-person, time/day of week TBD.
- To apply, you must be an undergraduate student at OSU, and be enrolled in enough credit hours to be considered a full time student.
- Tutors are required to work a minimum of 5 hours per week.
Tutor Job Description
- First-year tutors generally serve as appointment tutors and then may transition to drop-in tutoring.
- Tutors will work with students in a variety of courses ranging from Beginning Algebra to Foundations of Higher Mathematics. Tutors are required to work with students in one or two courses ranging from calculus 2 to Foundations of Higher Mathematics, depending on the tutor's previous coursework.
- Tutors are expected to be helpful, courteous, and respectful to students at all times.
- Tutors will work with students providing wonderful help and hints but will NOT do the problems for the student.
- Tutors should provide feedback to students and an opportunity for discussion and exploration.
- When working drop-in tutoring, tutors are expected to work with a student for one or two problems at a time and then help the next student.

MSLC Student Office Assistant Job Description
- Greet students and tutors as they arrive at tutoring. Help students feel welcome and at ease.
- Assist students signing-in/out via OnCourse.
- Provide first-time students with an overview of how tutoring works.
- Monitors for any issues causing an unfriendly or unhelpful atmosphere.
- Ensure the tutor room is kept neat.
- Other duties as assigned to support the MSLC tutoring mission

Job Description
- Acts as a liaison between in-person instructor and online students, answering student questions, and facilitating online group work with the assistance of the instructor.
- Ensures online students can see and hear what is going on in the classroom, including acting as a camera person to record and stream class video.

The MSLC's role is only to provide a list of private tutors to students. The MSLC does not coordinate, schedule, or host private tutoring.
Requirements
To be listed as a private tutor, you must have served as an class instructor of a mathematics course at OSU or be a current/graduated MSLC tutor.
You must confirm annually that you would like to remain listed.
Individuals unable to take addition students must inform the MSLC to temporarily remove them from the list.
Restrictions
Private tutors who are also math department instructors may not serve as a private tutor to students enrolled in courses they are currently teaching. This included students enrolled in other sections of the same course.
When engaging in private tutoring, tutors may not use MSLC space for their private tutoring or solicit students for private tutoring while in the MSLC tutor rooms.
